Ugly Book Covers: Lady Chatterlys' Daughter

Description

I know what the author was trying to do - trying to suggest that the girl wants to BE LIKE Lolita and have a middle-aged boyfriend/slave owner.

HOWEVER! The author clearly never actually read the original book. Nabokov has the predator Humbert as the narrator. We are in his disturbed mind for the entire length of the story and graphic depictions of underage female bodies come up often enough to be skin-crawling.

Lolita herself has no "voice" in the story - she is property from page one to the very end. We never see from her perspective, which makes the story all the more tragic.

As someone who finds pedophilia repulsive, I read the book for the poetic style and the horror-novel level of pure human debauchery. I have a hard time imagining anyone being turned on by anything being depicted in the book since, oddly enough, there is nothing being presented as erotic. Nabokov shows us someone who is sick and presents it as sick, not sexy. Getting turned on by 'Lolita' is as difficult as getting maternal instincts from 'Eraserhead'.

This girl, though.. she is clearly getting turned on. She can't be getting turned on by putting herself in Lolita's place - as I said, Lo doesn't have a voice. Thus, she is getting aroused by imagining herself as the predator.

Wow.

There was a similar problem with a gag about the characters having to burn books to keep warm and saving a particular page of Lolita. We never find out what was on it, but if the writers had actually read the book they'd know it was nothing good.

ETA: "the characters on the show Red Dwarf". Wasn't paying attention there.
